The Mowafaghian Foundation donated $15-million to establish a centre at UBC to advance brain health through research, education and treatment.
The centre, which opened in 2014, unites research and clinical care in the fields of neuroscience, psychiatry, neurology, and rehabilitation to better understand, treat, and prevent neurological and mental health conditions. Its integrated model connects research laboratories, clinical care, training, and patient-focused innovation, helping translate discoveries about the brain into meaningful improvements in health care across Canada. This community, comprised of foundational and clinical research teams and more than 100 investigators with multidisciplinary expertise, works in productive partnerships on a local, national and international scale.
Some examples of what the centre’s research teams are working on include:
- Brain development and neurodevelopmental disorders (autism, epilepsy)
- Mental health and addictions (addiction disorders, mood disorders, psychosis)
- Brain injury and repair (neurotrauma, stroke)
- Sensory/motor systems and movement disorders (Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS)
- Learning/memory and dementias (Neuromyelitis optica/immune-mediated brain disorders, Alzheimer’s and related dementias)
