Local Philanthropic Contributions

University of British Columbia

On April 4, 2011 the University of British Columbia announced the largest ever donation to the UBC Faculty of Medicine. The Djavad Mowafaghian Foundation’s record breaking donation was used to create the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health - a new Brain Research and Patient Care Facility.

The Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health, a 147,558 square foot building, is the largest brain health and research centre in Canada. Designed by Stantec Architecture Ltd., it is an esthetically beautiful facility that will house 185 students, 164 staff, and 225 multidisciplinary experts in Neuroscience research and clinical care. The integration of research and clinical care at the centre will allow for efficient, effective communication and understanding between experts, and the best and most thorough treatment options for patients.

The following quotes from UBC faculty members demonstrate the enthusiasm generated by the creation of the state of the art centre:

With the opening of the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health, the UBC Faculty of Medicine and our partner Vancouver Coastal Health will integrate research, education, and patient care to revolutionize health.  Creating a dedicated space where clinicians and scientists in psychiatry, neurology, and basic neurosciences work side-by-side is an extraordinary achievement, one that will improve countless lives for years to come – starting today.”
- Dr. Gavin Stuart, Vice Provost Health and Dean, Faculty of Medicine, UBC

There is a tremendous challenge and opportunity before us in understanding how the brain works.  I have been studying this extraordinary organ for nearly fifty years, and it has never been as exciting as it is today.  The Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health is enabling our vibrant brain research and health care community to come together to change the brain for the better.  I can’t wait to see what the next fifty years holds.
– Dr. Max Cynader, CM, OBC, Director, Brain Research Centre and Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health

Djavad Mowafaghian was thrilled to see his dream of years ago come to fruition with the opening of the centre.  Following is a quote from his heartfelt speech at the opening gala:

“If UBC accepts me as a volunteer, it would be my great honour to be stationed at the discharge door of the Brain Centre, and to give each cured patient who leaves a long stemmed rose and hug.  The day I am able to do so, will be one of the best and most rewarding days of my life.”
- Djavad Mowafaghian

In 2010, the Djavad Mowafaghian Foundation made a contribution towards biodiversity outreach and early childhood development research at the University of British Columbia. A portion of the donation was directed towards the funding of the Djavad Mowafaghian Atrium in the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at UBC, while the other portion was donated to the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP).
